I, Daniel Blake (2016), director: Ken Loach, Belgium, France, UK, 100 min
Winner of the Palme d’Or, the film tells the story of two ordinary people lost in the labyrinth of bureaucracy, who find happiness in friendship. Daniel Blake (Dave Johns) is a 60-year-old carpenter recovering from a heart attack. By chance, he meets Katie (Hayley Squires), a single mother, and her two children: Daisy (Briana Shann) and Dylan (Dylan McKiernan). Daniel decides to selflessly help the family get back on their feet. Yet when he applies for welfare benefits, he is faced with a cold, bureaucratic machine. Contrary to adversities of fate and heartless officials, Daniel and Katie struggle to rekindle their joy of life through true friendship.
