Designing is not only creating beautiful objects, but also researching new materials or making different narration for the ones already known.
It is also a process of constructing new tools that help us build new objects. We have always been fascinated by raw materials, their fragility, smoothness, viscosity, hardness, durability, scent or colour. We decided to use 3d printing technology and some other basic machines that we have constructed to experiment with easily accessible materials. To make this exhibition we rearranged our studio and transformed part of it into a little laboratory. We’ve collected some raw materials such as sand, mown grass, ground coffee waste or wood shaves and we tried to turn it into a printable paste. Some of the attempts were failures even though we thought they would be a success, but on the other hand the ones we didn’t believe in turned out to be a surprise that kept us moving. We made notes from all the trials so we could learn for future experiments. During this work we were not only designers but also farmers, scientists, chemists or engineers. We kept learning and searching for new solutions from different areas every day.
Polarisation was constantly present in our work. We divided our space for clean and dirty area. We became researchers and makers and object we’ve created aren’t always functional but are surprising. We worked with known materials but we transformed them with 3dprinting technology and algorithms. The Print’n Paste exhibition is a record of our research, machines, tools and objects and everything we experienced during that journey.
