Calligraphy – The Word as art

Date

6 – 14 july

place:

PPNT Gdynia, building I

The works presented at this exhibition depict different forms of calligraphy. Most of them refer to the words from St John’s Gospel „In the beginning was the Word”.

This quotation appears in various styles, languages and kinds of writing (e.g. Ruthenian and Greek). The Word (from Greek: Logos) which is the idea embedded in words becomes a separate visual reality, has different shapes in different languages, but at the same time represents the same meaning behind the concept of Logos.

The relationship between intertextuality, beheld expression and the inner idea inspired me to investigate it in all existing languages. The works presented at this exhibition are just the beginning of my journey towards this goal.

Every culture uses writing to record thoughts, beliefs, history and tradition. The kind of writing it uses depends on a variety of factors, such as the language native to a particular community and its aesthetics. The tool which one uses to write and the writing surface are of equal importance. They both form a visual entity – aesthetic and linguistic - which embodies its culture of origin.

The exhibition will be available throughout the whole festival.
